Backbeat: Sourland Music Festival slated for June 17
“Kicking up the beat is the Karl Dietel 5 band. This central Jersey-based band brings out an Americana influence that makes their set list familiar yet apart from the average. There’s an urgency about their delivery; the beat is fast yet the vibe is relaxed.”

Karl Dietel Five, “self-titled” / Dietelicious Music (www.karldietelfive.com)

Vocalist-keyboardist Karl Dietel follows his solo debut CD, “Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself,” with the self-titled debut of his new band, Karl Dietel Five. They follow their captain through 10 classic-rooted pop and rock songs that channel everything from their leader’s main influence, Billy Joel, to a meatier Bob Dylan vibe, such as on the opening “Getaway.” Along the way, there are impressive references to Squeeze on “Everytime You’re Gone,” Latin rhythms on “Baby,” jazz on “A Minor Song,” and gospel blues on the uplifting standout “River of Sin,” featuring the sweet slide guitar playing of Derek Davodowich…Dietel’s original band will appeal to fans of mellow mainstream rock, especially Joel, while his top-notch keyboard chops will impress all, as will those of saxophonist-flutist Perry Andrews. See KD5 live on Aug. 19 at Buck Hill Brewery and Restaurant, Blairstown, and Sept. 30, Rock Creek Tavern, Phillipsburg, and Dietel solo Aug. 24, Havana’s, New Hope, Pa.

“Karl and company have made an album of summery tunes that go to some interesting places. In a world of overproduced fluff, it’s always refreshing to hear real musicians playing real music.” -Arne Wendt (Jon Bon Jovi)
